  3. convergence of the NE and SE trade winds. To
  4. some extent the area affected moves N and S
  5. with seasonal changes. The doldrums are
  6. characterized by calm or very light westerly
  7. winds, during which there may be sudden
  8. squalls and stormy weather. For this reason
  9. the areas are avoided as far as possible by
  10. sailing ships.
